Fun and viewer review
This was one of the few Friday The 13th episodes that took place in the past, which means quite a bit of Hollywoodized historical exposition and less actual action sequences or supernatural mystery in locating a cursed object.
The two-sided painting, created by the Marquis while in prison, allows a person to journey back into 1790 France, but does not allow anything living to return, or at least that was the operating theory until near the end of the episode. Near the end of the episode, it is discovered that people can in fact safely use the painting to return home, although its not really explained how.
It also would appear that Miki was the person who told the sadistic professor how the cursed painting works, while writing a note in 1790. Oh, well.Friday the 13th television series was not without its faults. Sometimes the writing or a particular plot point would seem week, silly, exploitative or contrived.
But it was, overall, a great supernatural series, with a great cast that pushed the envelope both in terms of F/X, but also in terms of what sort of themes or content could be seen on network television during the late 1980s - 1990. Real crime and violence were major concerns for voters during this era and, for better or for the worse, popular entertainment has often becomes a cheap scapegoat for parents, politicians and media critics.
